The five services

What comes across the bench

Custom design

Designed and built from scratch, or reworked from something you already own.

Because the piece is made here, the design can still change while it is being made.

  • Engagement rings and wedding bands
  • Signet and crest rings
  • Hawaiian heritage designs
  • Pieces built around a single stone
  • Redesigns of jewelry you already own

Restoration and repair

Worn, broken or loose, brought back to wearable without being sent away.

Your piece stays on island and is assessed in front of you, so you hear what is worth doing and what is not.

  • Prong and setting work
  • Stone replacement and resetting
  • Ring resizing
  • Antique and vintage restoration

Appraisals and gem advisory

Know what you have, in writing, from a graduate gemologist.

Useful when you need documentation for insurance, or simply want to understand an inherited collection before deciding anything.

  • Written appraisals
  • Documentation for insurance
  • Gem identification
  • Making sense of an inherited collection

Selling estate jewelry

Jewel Box Hawaii is licensed by the State of Hawaii to buy estate and inherited jewelry, and the appraisal work happens in house.

  • Appraised in house first
  • Selling selectively or outright
  • Keeping, restoring or redesigning instead

How an appointment runs

Three steps, one person.

Jewel Box Hawaii is owned by Steve, a graduate gemologist trained in gemology, jewelry manufacturing, design and appraisal. Every custom piece, restoration and appraisal is handled by him in Honolulu rather than sent away.

  1. First, we look at the piece

At the appointment, or from photographs sent ahead of time. Most questions about whether something can be repaired, reset or valued are answered by seeing it.

  2. Then we agree what is actually going to happen

For a custom piece that means the design, the metal and the stone. For a repair it means what is worth doing and what is not. You get a straight answer either way, including when the answer is that a piece should be left alone.

  3. The work happens here

On the bench in Honolulu. Nothing is shipped off island, which is why a design can still be adjusted part way through.

Questions

Before your appointment

Anything not covered here, ask through the contact page.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes. We work by appointment so every consultation gets focused, uninterrupted attention.

Is the work done here, or sent away?

Here, in Honolulu. Every custom piece, restoration and appraisal is handled in house, which is why a design can be adjusted mid process and an heirloom never leaves the island.

Can you work with a stone or a piece I already own?

Yes. Inherited stones are welcome, and reworking something you already own is a large part of what we do.

How long does it take?

It depends on the piece. Timelines vary with complexity and stone sourcing. An Aloha Pauahi bracelet is custom made to the wrist in four to six weeks.

Can you tell me what an inherited piece is worth?

Yes. Steve is a graduate gemologist, so identification, valuation and written documentation can all happen in the same conversation.

Do you buy jewelry as well as work on it?

Yes. Jewel Box Hawaii is licensed by the State of Hawaii to buy estate and inherited jewelry, so a valuation and an offer can happen together rather than across separate appointments.
