In traditional Native Hawaiian practice, the ʻiewe was believed to care for a baby prenatally, much like an elder sibling cares for a younger one out in the world.

Out of love and respect for this relationship, the ʻiewe was returned to the earth, planted under or near a tree at the family home. On the day of Princess Bernice Pauahi Paki’s birth, her ʻiewe, or afterbirth, was buried under a newly planted tamarind tree in the front yard of her home, ʻAikupika.

Over time, this tamarind tree became a safe, sheltered place for Pauahi. She spent many hours beneath its branches, listening to and helping others. Her love for the people of Hawaiʻi is reflected in the strong branches, delicate leaves, and radiant blossoms of this beloved tamarind tree.

As a class, we wanted to capture these same characteristics and values, and the Aloha Pauahi bracelet does just that. The metal embodies the strength of her spirit, while the hand-engraved tamarind leaves and flowers represent her far-reaching love for her Hawaiian kingdom.

Named for how she would sign her letters and notes, “Aloha Pauahi” speaks to both her aloha and her deep love for her people. This must-have heirloom piece combines storied tradition with contemporary craftsmanship, creating a timeless adornment and a continued legacy of our Princess.
